Jeanette McDonald has worked in the field of educational development (ED) for
close to ten years, first at the University of Guelph and now at Wilfrid
Laurier University as Manager of Educational Development in the Office of
Teaching Support Services. During this time, her positions have evolved with
responsibility for both instructional development and distance education,
including teaching, consulting, program development and curricular/course
design. She has a special interest in student assessment, course design, the
professional development of faculty and teaching assistants, and contributing
to the development institutional policy in support of teaching and learning.
These and other interests are situated within her centre's mission which has
the following six goals: (1) profiling and supporting teaching innovations and
best practices (e.g., faculty profiles); (2) encouraging excellence and ongoing
skill development; (3) advancing the integration of educational technologies;
(4) providing input and direction on university policies and projects related
to teaching and learning (e.g., academic integrity); (5) promoting and
supporting scholarly teaching practice and research; and (6) networking and
dialoguing with higher education communities about teaching, learning and
scholarship.
Jeanette's work and interest in collaborating with others to provide a range of
quality teaching and learning resources and supports has led to her involvement
with and contributions to the facultydevelopment.ca website and the Institute
for Advancement of Teaching in Higher Education (IATHE/Institute), as well as
the development and first offering (co-instructor) of the IATHE's online
teaching course - "Introduction to Teaching in Higher Education: Transforming
Teaching, Learning and Self." Jeanette sits on the IATHE board of directors and
exectutive committee as one of the founding members, and, as of June 2007, on
the Educational Developers Caucus of the Society for Teaching and Learning in
Higher Education executive committee as Vice-Chair Communications.
Currently Jeanette is completing her Doctorate of Education in Higher Education
at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto.
Her research on pathways into educational development from a Canadian
university perspective builds upon the work of Dr. Susan Wilcox of Queen's
University who traced the history of educational development in Canada. It also
parallels the work being done by a group of international faculty developers to
which she belongs that is funded by the Internationational Opportunities Fund
of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
